Something I’ve never been great at is exercising on vacation. Who’s with me? (99% of everyone, I’m guessing :-P)
When we come to New York on vacation to visit family, we know we’ll be eating the whole time, so, to be honest, my “healthy diet” often goes out the window…and I’m okay with that. It’s called vacation!
(These are the snacks my brother and I bought for the hotel/plane. Only the essentials!)
But to offset some of that eating, I decided to make an effort to exercise this time around. I wanna look good in my dress today….it’s wedding day!
Happy wedding day to my beautiful cousin Kimberly and her fiancΓ© Brian, who has pretty much been in our family for 10 years anyway π
Anyhizzle, on with the workouts!
I got my elliptical + abs in on my lunch break on Monday, amidst a crazy 2 days at work that included scheduling 30+ meetings for my bosses (to take place over 2 days) and training my temp.
The next day, we were taking an 11:50pm red eye from Sacramento –> NYC. I decided to go for a run in the evening, thinking I’d wear myself out enough to sleep on the plane.
It worked! Kinda. I was exhausted by the time we were at our gate. Then, we were delayed 20-30 minutes, and the anxiety associated with that mess just woke me up more. I slept about 45 minutes out of our 5-hour flight. Lets just say I was not the happiest camper to deal with when we landed at JFK at 8:30am. Our waitress at IHOP got my order wrong and I was pretty much crying in our booth….drama queen! Needless to say, I didn’t have the energy to exercise on Wednesday, and that was A-okay.
Yesterday morning I hit up the elliptical in our hotel gym, but couldn’t do much more than that since the gym was tiny and occupied by 2 wannabe guidos.
So I improvised and did some ab stuff on the floor in me & my brothers room, complete with my boom box iPad. Depending on whether its raining outside (it has been SO humid), I will either go for a run this morning or repeat my elliptical sesh. Definitely wanna work off some of the drinks we’ll be having later!
Do you work out on vacation?
What’s your favorite no-gym-required workout?
Your story about travels, and eventually crying at IHOP because your order came out wrong honestly sounds like it was told directly from my life. I will absolutely be sharing this with my fiance tonight, he’ll love it! (and I’ll feel good knowing I’m not the only one that breaks down like this sometimes under stress!)
It’s funny. If you had asked me this a year ago, I would say I’m one of the few people that struggles with NOT exercising on vacation. I have a really hard time with taking extended time off. One day, sure, but more than that, I start to go nuts. Once I started blogging though I realize I’m actually much more relaxed about it than a lot of the HLBs. So maybe we should all take a lesson from you and learn to loosen the reins! You still got in a few workouts and had a more relaxed approach, which I know I could benefit from!
I try to work out on vacation but dont beat myself up about it if I don’t fit it in. I recently came up with this workout to do on vacation: http://dailycupofkate.com/2013/08/01/july-recap-and-a-workout/
It goes by so fast and I felt great after I finished!
I actually like working out on vacation, to get the day started right π For a weeks vacation I may do 3 to 4 days, but if I dont get to it I dont freak out, if it gets done then right on!
Yay for the sorority girl workout! π
Hope you had a great trip to NYC! I always find it hard to exercise on trips to places like New York, where the activities are definitely not centered around being active. Props to you for getting to the hotel gym!
I haven’t been on “vacation” in a long time. But I always try to do some sort of activity that gets my heart going and produces some sweat. I walked every single day after dinner for the summer months while visiting family in Hungary (essential after my aunts cooking) and do quick runs in the am when visiting my sister or friends. I feel “off” when I don’t work out.
The guidos would have scared me off too.
I don’t normally like to work out every day of a vacation, but if I’m gone for a whole week I like to squeeze in a run or 2 and then I’ll do a workout like this after 1 of my runs since it requires no equipment.

Vacations are meant for sleeping in, drinking cocktails and eating whatever your heart desires though! I think if you’re able to workout a few times on a vacation, you’re doing good! π And if you’re in NYC still, you’ll do enough walking during the day to burn off those extra calories!
P.S. Love the Blend workout tank!
