We made it through another week, y’all! Um, remind me never to try to make “y’all” happen again.

Let’s chalk it up to the fact that I am kind of in a rut. Socially, professionally, in every way possible it seems. There are only two things that I’ve consistently looked forward to these past couple of weeks: the Saturday morning Midtown Farmer’s Market, and my workouts. Food and fitness. Typical.

But otherwise, I am unfortunately in a slump. I feel like this happens every few years for me; I am definitely one to crave change. I chose to go to college in Santa Barbara mainly to get as far away from Sacramento as possible (at the time, the only way to get there was either a 6 hour drive, or via a 2-part flight). Then, because apparently 4 years in one place is too much for me, I spent one year of college dicking around studying abroad.

So you can imagine that now, after three years of living in the same place (with the same job for about half of that time) I’m kind of going stir crazy. Last weekend marked 3 years since graduation, and I’ll be turning 25 in three months. My twenties are almost half over. WTF?

In an effort to combat my case of the grumpies, today I am bringing you some things that I do like. 😉

Midtown Farmer’s Market

farmersmarket

As mentioned above, I have been l-o-v-i-n-g the Saturday morning farmer’s market. The big year round Sunday Farmer’s Market is a good 20 blocks away from my apartment, which is kind of a long biking distance. Every week during the summer, there are mini farmer’s markets around my office, but they tend to have fewer vendors. The Midtown Farmer’s Market has live music, tons of vendors, is a whopping 5 blocks away from my apartment AND has free bike valet! I can’t wait to go tomorrow, I spotted tomatoes as I biked past yesterday’s market. I hate most tomatoes, but LOVE fresh cherry tomatoes and sometimes even homegrown regular ones too.

Pre-Planned Workouts

I have been trying to incorporate more strength training into my workouts, and workouts like this are perfect! I did this workout on Wednesday and my triceps are still super sore. I also have an iPad subscription to Women’s Health magazine, which has a lot of 15-minute workouts that I’ve been trying out. I did this body weight workout last week, but was  little leery of doing an L stand without someone to spot me. Also, ab roll ups are like the burpee’s annoying cousin.

Running

longrun

I ran my furthest run ever last week, 3.4 miles! I have also been toying with the idea of running a 10K in late August or early September. Somehow, training 4 days per week in the Sacramento heat doesn’t sound desirable (or safe) though. I have upped my “minimum” distance to about 2.75 miles, so I am at least somewhat on track for the training in case I do decide to go for it. The training schedule I found shows 2.5-3 mile runs during the week (eventually increasing to 3-3.5 miles), and long runs on Saturdays.

Really Good Food

chicken & grilled veggies with fresh corn!

banhmi

spicy pork Banh Mi from Gogi’s Korean BBQ

cinnabuns

“semi homemade” cinnamon buns. made from an Auntie Annes kit which included yeast, flour, cinnamon sugar, and premade icing.

taco

meatless monday taco! with summer squash, yellow carrots, bell peppers and black beans. also, SRIRACHA.

I have been eating pretty frickin well lately.

Where do you get your workout ideas?

Change: Love it or hate it?

Fitness Friday

Sorry for the sporadic posting this week. I was cooking up a storm this 3-day weekend, but one of the dinners was a recipe I’m testing from The Beeroness’s new cookbook, so I can’t share it until the book comes out! (but I will hint that I got to test one of the recipes pictured at that link :-P)

Otherwise, I’ve been up to my ears in work. It’s been nice to feel so productive all day long, but I’ll tell ya my head is spinning. In the past week or two, I’ve sent out requests to schedule 55 meetings with lawmakers at the Capitol – 40 for my two bosses, another 15 for one of my bosses and a client who’s got his own schedule to work with…lordy has it ever been fun coordinating all these schedules.

I’m at the point where I’ve scheduled and rescheduled so many meetings (25 out of the 55 are on the calendar) that I don’t even want to do anything social for the next, oh I dunno, month, for fear that I’d have to coordinate a schedule. Haha.

Also, is it weird that every time I schedule a meeting for February 14th, I feel guilty? I hope I’m not cockblocking my bosses from having V-day lunch or early dinner with their spouses! No fancy dinner planned for T-Man and I, however — Thursday night is dodgeball night, so our plans are set! Fitting too, seeing as it’s where we met 🙂

Us playing in our first season in July 2011 🙂 P.S. Sorry Lisa…but the other version of this picture was taken about .5 seconds earlier, and was just as bad….lol.

So, there’s my excuse for not posting the normal 3 entries this week. However, on to the topic at hand:

I have been attempting to get back into the swing of things fitness wise. I was having stomach issues in November and December. THEN, I had a deathly cold on Christmas Day (which was miserable, no Christmas hugs for Katie!) that took me a week or two to kick. I managed to go for a run on New Years Eve, but days after, I had surgery to get a cancerous mole removed and took it easy for a while.

Long story short, I went for a jog this week and it was my first in 3 weeks. And the one before that…was the first in 2 weeks.

Though I haven’t been running much, I have been going to the gym and doing elliptical + abs, the ultimate girl workout haha. I have been trying to keep my Fitness Goal “Resolutions” in mind when planning my workouts.

Fitness Goals
  • Run a 5K race
  • Start weight training again (and eat more protein!)
  • Be able to do a 2 minute plank and 2 minute leg lifts
  • Run 25 miles in a month (several times if possible)

Specifically, I’ve been focusing a lot on planks and leg lifts (holding this position for as long as I can). Some days I can hold them for 30 seconds, some days, I can hold them for a minute no sweat. I try to add in other ab workouts as well, and the only weight training I’ve done is on the lat pulldown machine – it works out the same muscle I use throwing a dodgeball, so I figure if I strengthen it outside of dodgeball I’ll avoid being sore for 2 days after every Thursday!

Add in the fact that I walk or bike to work (it’s about 7 blocks, or .7 miles each way) at least 3 out of 5 days per week, and you’ve got my “fitness plan”!

I generally try to exercise 3 days per week, though the 3 day weekend set me back a little bit this week. However, I have averaged 50g of protein per day this week, which is a big improvement for me. Here are my last 3 workouts:

  • Friday January 18 — Elliptical 15 minutes, two 1-minute planks, two 30-second side planks

photo 2

Fact: I watch Food Network every time I’m on the elliptical. /endfact

  • Tuesday January 22 — Run 2.2 miles (time was 21:30), and two 30-second planks after I finished being dead/sprawled out on the grass in the park

photo 1

  • Thursday January 24 — Elliptical 20 minutes, 60 crunches & 50 side crunches per side, one 1-minute plank, one 30-second leg lift, and 2 reps of 15 lat pulldowns (set to 30 lbs because my muscle is all gone!)

Awkwardly trying to take a picture without the other person in the gym noticing me…

Also, because it’s Friday, I will leave you all with my favorite hilariously fun song to work out to:

Thank you Gunther. You touch my tra la la.

What kind of music/TV shows do you like to work out to?

How do you keep your muscles toned?

A Day in Food (and Exercise)

Thanks all for your likes, comments, and views on my last entry! Glad to see there are many others who find body image to be an important topic to discuss.

I also spent most of Wednesday messing around with my blog layout. I like this one much better, because it allows a more visual picture of all my recent posts, and not just the featured ones. Let me know what you think!

Earlier this week, I decided to chronicle what I ate for a day. Though I’ve used calorie counting apps before, doing this really made me realize how much I snack! Literally all my meals had a snack in between. I’d like to think I at least kept them healthy though 🙂 It’s hard not to snack at work these days, since the CA Legislature is on recess and my bosses (they are lobbyists) are off taking their vacations. Boredom definitely –> snacking, in my case! Regardless, I’d say this was a pretty typical food day for me.

Breakfast: Yoplait Strawberry Greek Yogurt with Granola (only 230 calories, and the granola makes it super filling!)

Snack: Small handful of macadamia nuts and almonds

We’ve obviously made a dent in this bucket over the last month, ha.

Before I ate lunch, I worked out for a little bit. I ran the stairs only ONCE (8 floors/16 flights) and that was enough to make my legs scream…I’m really out of shape from not running. (Thanks, broken hand) Followed it up with 20 minutes on a stationary bike and crunches.

And also….a photo shoot in the gym whose soul purpose was to see how gross and muscly I could make my legs look.

Mission accomplished, obviously.

Lunch: Black Bean Soup (I also continuously refill my mug of green tea throughout the day)

Snack: Oreo Cookie

Because these are the other snack options in our break room…(I’ve had enough Nature Valley granola bars to last me a lifetime!)

Dinner: Grilled Veggie Tacos, again inspired by Edible Perspective

Everything was grilled! Zucchini, Onions, Jalapeno, Grape Tomatoes, Yellow Bell Pepper and Avocado…. + a healthy squeeze of lime juice! I also had some fresh blueberries on the side. (I didn’t want them to go bad)

Dessert: IPA & Fries (haha)

After he got off work, T-Man and I stopped by Rubicon, a brewpub by my apartment for Pint Night. We both got IPA’s, and he got a Caesar Salad (with a side of balsamic vin mixed in, his fave!) + criss-cut fries…of which I stole many.

That was pretty much it. I also walked home from work and to/from Pint Night, which is about 1 mile total. Being forced to walk everywhere since T-Man works and I don’t ride my bike as often with my cast has definitely helped me feel a little more active in this period of inactivity!

Hope everyone has a great weekend. This weekend is Launch Festival in Sacramento, excited to see Chromeo for a second time as well as DJ Shadow and some other awesome acts! NOT TO MENTION the OLYMPICS start tonight! So unbelievably excited! I love watching gymnastics, swimming, diving, basketball, track and field…the options are endless!

What about you guys? What are your fave Summer Olympic sports??
