Weekend in Photos

Happy Monday from cloudy, humid, hot Sacramento?

It’s overcast and 80 degrees outside already, with a high of 103 on the horizon. What the what?! I was going to go for a jog this morning since it would be too hot to go at lunch, but it was just too muggy. It’s never a good sign when the A/C wakes up at the same time you do!

Anyway, I had an excellent weekend doing a whole lot of nothing. After a couple of fun weekends and a whole week of vacation, I seriously just wanted to veg out all weekend, and that’s more or less what I did!

Since I had kickball on Wednesday and stayed out late on Thursday (dodgeball) I decided to stay in on Friday. I started off the weekend with a post-work workout, and a decision to finally unpack from New York. Little did I know that my roomie had similar plans to clean up around the apartment, so most of Friday evening was spent cleaning! Haha. Add in my ideal Friday night dinner of cheese, crackers, fruit & wine, and I was in heaven!

Another reason I decided to call it an early night was because I was going on a run with my friend Nicki in the morning (we ran a 5K together earlier this year!). I never run with a buddy, but I think I might have to start.. we went slow and steady, chatting and gabbing the whole way, and before I knew it we had run 4.1 miles! What?!

As per my usual Saturday routine, the morning jog was followed by a trip to the Farmers Market. This week, I went with corn, cherry tomatoes, local cage-free eggs, squash, mushrooms, and some cute little Indian eggplants!

Another benefit of having a relaxing weekend was that I got to eat some good, clean, homemade food for the first time in a while. Including: badly cracked egg + eggplant + goat cheese in a tortilla, southwestern salad with turkey-quinoa meatballs, Moscow Mules (haha okay not clean, but the ginger beer was housemade at the bar!), and a protein packed black bean-quinoa-egg-sriracha bowl.

I did some serious damage at the Macy’s Sunday sale yesterday and was worried my bag wouldn’t fit in my bike basket. Crisis averted! I finally succumbed and signed up for a Macy’s credit card…I’m in for it, you guys.

The perfectly relaxing weekend finished up with a super tense viewing of Breaking Bad at Sam & David’s place. Sam cooked up some amazing quesadillas and guac as we chewed off our nails and stress-sweated through the episode (ok, maybe that was just me…) that had an epic cliffhanger. SO GOOD!

Hope you all had a good weekend as well! I’m going to try to get back to my more frequent posting schedule, but to be honest that might not happen until after my cast comes off…Typing and using a computer mouse with a cast on your thumb/forearm is not the business. 9 more days!

Do you run with friends?

What did you think of Breaking Bad?

Fitness Friday

Well, folks, I have survived another week. And yes, survived is totally the correct word and not an exaggeration haha.

Check out the fun week I have planned for just one of my bosses next week:

Yeah…. I don’t envy him.

Or myself. You should see the spreadsheets I had to make to keep track of all those meetings!

The days I feel best equipped to deal with all the stress are the days I fit in a workout on my lunch break.

We’ve got a nice little gym in our building with a couple of ellipticals, a couple of bikes, and a couple of treadmills, along with half a dozen weight machines. I swear I only take these pictures because I never know what kinds of photos to post in fitness-related entries, haha.

I have been keeping up pretty well with my 3x per week workout routine. Here’s what I’ve done the last two weeks (not including a 7 mile bike ride on Sunday!)

So what I meant by “real” side planks is that usually I look like this, but on Wednesday I did side planks that looked like this. Ironically, I think the ones I have been doing are actually more difficult!

I’ve been doing a lot better than last time I checked in on my protein intake. My average used to be in the 40g/day range, and now the average is closer to 50/60g, meaning I’m higher on active days and lower on inactive days, as I should be.

This is thanks to a batch of chili I made last week, and a couple of other food factors as well:

Turkey meatloaf from my mom. Awww yeah. I’ve been buying a lot of ground turkey lately, usually making it into meatballs. Tons of lean protein!

feb8th4

Lentil tacos fed me for two meals. Yum.

I am also giving these Luna Protein bars a try because they were on sale for like 50 cents each at Grocery Outlet Bargain Market (AKA “Groc Out” {pronounced gross out} AKA my favorite place ever). I’m not the hugest fan but they have put me at my correct protein levels a few times on work out days.

Also, dodgeball is obviously an excellent workout (even if it is usually canceled out by a beer or two afterward):

I’m not sure where my weight is at these days because the scale in the gym is out of batteries, haha. I shouldn’t care, but I am concerned about losing (or gaining) too much. I don’t want to go above or below my normal weight by 2-3 pounds. My stomach issues still pop up once in a while, causing me to eat fewer calories than I should on some days. I hit the right amount of nutrients, but my calorie count has definitely fallen below what it should be on occasion.

I’m hoping to run a 5K on March 16th here in Sacramento, but I haven’t made the plunge yet and signed up. Luckily, the weather has been great for jogging and I am feeling confident; I just need to slowly inch back towards that 3 mile mark!

In my quest to run further and faster, I finally updated my jogging playlist. It’s all pretty much cheesy pop/hip hop music that makes me wanna sing and dance as I run. OK, mostly sing…why else would I have a song from the Jersey Boys soundtrack on there?

I wish I could say I was taking it easy this weekend, but T-Man has friends coming into town PLUS I have an important application (which includes a couple of essays) due Monday, so it looks like I have a few more days of balancing work and play ahead of me!

Any fun plans this weekend?

Fitness Friday

Sorry for the sporadic posting this week. I was cooking up a storm this 3-day weekend, but one of the dinners was a recipe I’m testing from The Beeroness’s new cookbook, so I can’t share it until the book comes out! (but I will hint that I got to test one of the recipes pictured at that link :-P)

Otherwise, I’ve been up to my ears in work. It’s been nice to feel so productive all day long, but I’ll tell ya my head is spinning. In the past week or two, I’ve sent out requests to schedule 55 meetings with lawmakers at the Capitol – 40 for my two bosses, another 15 for one of my bosses and a client who’s got his own schedule to work with…lordy has it ever been fun coordinating all these schedules.

I’m at the point where I’ve scheduled and rescheduled so many meetings (25 out of the 55 are on the calendar) that I don’t even want to do anything social for the next, oh I dunno, month, for fear that I’d have to coordinate a schedule. Haha.

Also, is it weird that every time I schedule a meeting for February 14th, I feel guilty? I hope I’m not cockblocking my bosses from having V-day lunch or early dinner with their spouses! No fancy dinner planned for T-Man and I, however — Thursday night is dodgeball night, so our plans are set! Fitting too, seeing as it’s where we met 🙂

Us playing in our first season in July 2011 🙂 P.S. Sorry Lisa…but the other version of this picture was taken about .5 seconds earlier, and was just as bad….lol.

So, there’s my excuse for not posting the normal 3 entries this week. However, on to the topic at hand:

I have been attempting to get back into the swing of things fitness wise. I was having stomach issues in November and December. THEN, I had a deathly cold on Christmas Day (which was miserable, no Christmas hugs for Katie!) that took me a week or two to kick. I managed to go for a run on New Years Eve, but days after, I had surgery to get a cancerous mole removed and took it easy for a while.

Long story short, I went for a jog this week and it was my first in 3 weeks. And the one before that…was the first in 2 weeks.

Though I haven’t been running much, I have been going to the gym and doing elliptical + abs, the ultimate girl workout haha. I have been trying to keep my Fitness Goal “Resolutions” in mind when planning my workouts.

Fitness Goals
  • Run a 5K race
  • Start weight training again (and eat more protein!)
  • Be able to do a 2 minute plank and 2 minute leg lifts
  • Run 25 miles in a month (several times if possible)

Specifically, I’ve been focusing a lot on planks and leg lifts (holding this position for as long as I can). Some days I can hold them for 30 seconds, some days, I can hold them for a minute no sweat. I try to add in other ab workouts as well, and the only weight training I’ve done is on the lat pulldown machine – it works out the same muscle I use throwing a dodgeball, so I figure if I strengthen it outside of dodgeball I’ll avoid being sore for 2 days after every Thursday!

Add in the fact that I walk or bike to work (it’s about 7 blocks, or .7 miles each way) at least 3 out of 5 days per week, and you’ve got my “fitness plan”!

I generally try to exercise 3 days per week, though the 3 day weekend set me back a little bit this week. However, I have averaged 50g of protein per day this week, which is a big improvement for me. Here are my last 3 workouts:

  • Friday January 18 — Elliptical 15 minutes, two 1-minute planks, two 30-second side planks

photo 2

Fact: I watch Food Network every time I’m on the elliptical. /endfact

  • Tuesday January 22 — Run 2.2 miles (time was 21:30), and two 30-second planks after I finished being dead/sprawled out on the grass in the park

photo 1

  • Thursday January 24 — Elliptical 20 minutes, 60 crunches & 50 side crunches per side, one 1-minute plank, one 30-second leg lift, and 2 reps of 15 lat pulldowns (set to 30 lbs because my muscle is all gone!)

Awkwardly trying to take a picture without the other person in the gym noticing me…

Also, because it’s Friday, I will leave you all with my favorite hilariously fun song to work out to:

Thank you Gunther. You touch my tra la la.

What kind of music/TV shows do you like to work out to?

How do you keep your muscles toned?

Workouts Lately: An Unattainable Goal?

What an election night. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to watch election returns like a nerd like I usually do, because I ended up helping T-Man finish up and get his GOTV canvassers all squared away for the end of the campaign. We did get to go to the campaign’s election party, which was fun, and this morning we woke up to the news that preliminary results show T-Man’s candidate is up by 144 votes. YIKES! They still have a lot of absentee ballots to count, so this could be a squeaker, folks!

Anyhow, here’s my long awaited jogging update that I think I’ve referred to a few times. Tune in and leave feedback – I need your help!

So, when I broke my hand in June, I kind of fell off the workout wagon.

Let me preface this all by saying I don’t enjoy running. I am that person who says “OK, time to go for a jog!” then spends 30 minutes cleaning my room, or scrubbing dishes…anything to procrastinate running. When I moved home after graduating in 2010, I decided I wanted to get in better shape – and was bored out of my mind, being unemployed and all – so I started running to an elementary school every morning. It was .9 miles each way, and once I got there I would stop, take a break, drink some water, and come back. Within a month or two, I could run all the way around the school and back (just over two miles) without stopping. Since then, I’ve been jogging at least 2 miles 2-3 times per week. I still hate it every time, but I always feel fantastic afterward, and am convinced it has played a huge role in my overall health and weight loss since 2010.

ANYWAY, back to this year. In April, I was at the peak of my running game. I was jogging three times per week and playing dodgeball on Wednesdays (a moderately good workout, but it was usually canceled out by at least 2 drinks at the bar afterward, haha). I also magically pushed through the 3 mile threshold that I never thought I would, and was running at least 2.5 miles most of the time.

In May, I wasn’t as great about running three times per week, but I moved into my apartment downtown that month, and thus started walking to and from work several days a week, so my fitness wasn’t compromised. I still stayed around the 2.5 mile range.

Then, my injury and summer weather happened. Because of the heat, I only ran 5 times in June (about once a week), plus, dodgeball twice per week. On the evening of June 28th, I broke my hand playing dodgeball. During the 10 weeks I had my cast, and then my splint, (so, during the entire months of July and August, plus a couple of weeks) I only jogged twice.

I wasn’t quite feeling confident enough to get back on the horse in September. It was still hot, and I was still wearing my splint most of the time, so I stuck to the elliptical. I ran three times in September, about two miles each time.

In the middle of October, I started getting back on track for real.

(Keep in mind that on weeks I jogged less than twice, I was probably working out on the elliptical, and doing abs & weight machines instead)

Through most of October, I was running at a 10 minute/mile pace, which is a fair amount slower than in April/May. But last Monday, I finally pushed myself to run 2.5 miles again, and trimmed a minute off my time, to boot! (My GPS tracking app is a bit off, and when I edited the route online to reflect what I had actually ran, it came out as 2.47 instead)

Since then (for the past week and a half), I’ve been steadily running 2.5 miles.

Now here’s my question for all you runners out there…

How likely is it that I will be able to run a 5K on Thanksgiving?

Unfortunately, our upcoming vacation kind of puts a wrench in things (plus, I forgot my running shoes on Monday so I can’t stick to my usual MWF schedule this week)…I think its a bit of a stretch to aim for 3.1 miles by November 22nd. Why must Thanksgiving be so early this year?! Gah.

I’m not feeling very confident that I’ll be up to 3 miles by Thanksgiving week, but I definitely want to run a 5K soon. Maybe the Fleet Feet Free Holiday Classic on December 16th? That sounds more attainable…

As for Run to Feed the Hungry on Thanksgiving, maybe T-Man and I can just run-walk our way through it together! (he’s not much of a runner)

Have you ran races before? How long did you train for it/them?

also,

What tracking app do you use on your runs? I use MapMyRun, but the GPS tracker isn’t always accurate…
