A Little of This, A Little of That…

Happy Friday!

Unlike recent weeks, I wasn’t SUPER OMG DESPERATE for this week to be over. It’s been a relatively quiet week at work (busy for sure, but not OMG-wanna-rip-my-hair-out stressful) and I have kept it similarly quiet at home — I’ve been laying low and been in bed by 10:30 every night!

I decided on Monday to give myself a little detox, so I’ve not only abstained from alcohol for the past 5 days, but I’ve also limited my handfuls of cashews at work, and spoonfuls of Nutella at home 😉

In addition to the detox and walking/biking to work every day, I ran twice (3 miles on Tues & 5 miles on Thurs) and did strength building exercises twice (on Weds and this morning):

Wednesday’s workout has been my tried & true upper body workout for almost a year now. It was pretty much the only strength training I did (1x per week) while training for my half…It gets in some good upper body work, but the better benefit may be the core strengthening that comes from all those planks! If I have time, I also finish up with V-ups and regular ol’ crunches for good measure.

Because I’m not doing Thursday dodgeball this season, I enjoyed an early bedtime last night and a rare 6:30am Friday morning wake up call! I’ve been doing the above workout for so long that I decided to look for a new GPP Fitness workout to switch things up. I did 2 rounds of Cross Sectional, and I did the V-ups, Stab Situps and high windmills from t-AB-ata. My legs are burrrrning from Cross Sectional!

.

ANYWAY, I digress. This totally wasn’t meant to be a Fitness post! I just wanted to pop in and share a few things I’ve enjoyed this week, and even a fun HANDWRITTEN quiz that I yanked from Christina at Hungry Meets Healthy. Enjoy!

75 Thoughts Every Runner Has While Out For A Run

LOVE. IT. My favorite is the thoughts that go through your head when you jump over puddles. Also, all the thoughts that go on in the last mile of your run.

AdvoCare Spark

My Blend-turned-Real-life friend Becky has been pumping up Advocare products for the past few months…I texted her yesterday that I ran out of my beloved pre-workout supplement (fitmixer Clean Energy) and she happened to have just gotten a bunch of variety packs of Spark, AdvoCare’s energy drink mix. I ordered some and can’t wait to try it! I’m not big on supplements, but I do like using a pre-workout drink before my long runs. I’ll be sure to report back on how I like it! If you’re interested, be sure to visit Becky’s blog or click one of the above links to be taken to her store!

The 10 Most Important Things We Learned from How I Met Your Mother

As you all probably know, How I Met Your Mother ended this week. Sadface. While I can’t say I’ve watched since the start of the show, I did start watching from the beginning about 4-5 years ago and have been hooked ever since. I love the writing, I love how they’ve kept us guessing about the Mother, and I lovelovelove the characters. I definitely cried multiple times during the series finale, and I have mixed feelings about how it ended, but I largely agree with this article about what went down. {spoiler alert in the article, obviously!}

And last but not least… you know those handwritten quizzes they have celebs fill out in Cosmo? Welp, I found one for bloggers! If you’re interested in filling it out, you can print out the blank template here. Enjoy!

SBIZHUBC28014040412060Before you say anything about liking my handwriting, please take note that I toootally spent 5x longer than usual writing out every single word to make sure it was legible. HA.

Have a great weekend!

Friday Faves

Hello and TGIF!

Hope you all have some fun plans for the weekend. For me, Halloween starts tomorrow…goes on through Thursday…until Friday, when we celebrate it one last night for my roomie’s birthday! Needless to say there’s a lot of fun in my future 🙂

I also happened upon some fun things this week. Gather round while I share the goods!

1. This gif. AKA me in a nutshell.

GETTING READY

To go out:

For work:

I never have makeup on before 10am at work. I actually may or may not have just not put on makeup at all today….#lazy

2. Group Halloween costumes

Some of my favorite costumes of the last 5 years have been the group/couples costumes I’ve done (Taylor Swift/Kanye… Betty Draper/Joan… Bike riding Mormons….) This weekend, I’m participating in a group costume that is sure to turn some heads:

good girls

I’ve no doubt admitted my unabashed love for this song before. We’re toootally taking it to a whole new level.

3. The t-AB-ata workout from GPP Fitness

t-ab-ata

This ab workout has been one of my most dreaded favorites for a long time now. The last time I did it, it left me sore for 2-3 days! So when I picked up my outfit for the aforementioned costume (which definitely shows off my midriff…and then some), I knew I’d have to whip my abs into shape! Since they posted it back in June, I’ve started incorporating V-ups into my normal workout routine…they kick my butt, but get my abs soo much stronger/more defined!

4. This article: How to Celebrate Halloween Without Being a Sexist

Also relevant. I can see both sides of this issue and I like that the article goes into both sides and defends the so-called “sluts” of Halloween as well. For the first Halloween since college, I will be scantily clad tomorrow…I’m not looking for any unwanted attention or “asking for it”, my friends and I just happened to pick a current idea for a relevant pop culture Halloween costume and feel comfortable sportin’ it!

75% of the reason I exercise 4x per week is to feel good and feel good about myself, but I’d be lying if I said that other 25% didn’t involve wanting to look good! What’s the use of these gunz and abs if no one ever sees them? 😉

5. These 2 blog posts!

Alisha over at Alisha’s Appetite wrote an awesome post this week about not letting injury get you down – something I’m all too familiar with! And Becky at Olives n’ Wine has an awesome post up today as well, based on this simple quote: “If tomorrow, women woke up and decided they really liked their bodies, just think how many industries would go out of business. – Dr. Gail Dines”

Side note: I’m super excited to see these two girls (and Carly & Sara) in Chicago in just TWO WEEKS!! I’m so looking forward to a Blend girls weekend full of food, fun, football, and shenanigans 🙂

6. La Terra Fina dips

Several weeks ago, I was sent some new-to-me dips from La Terra Fina. Their dips have always been available at places like Costco, but they’re currently rolling out to other grocery stores. I am 100% all about dips and snacky meals (see here and here), so I was stoked to try them. According to La Terra Fina, their dips are “Made with all natural ingredients…gluten-free…contain no nuts or trans-fats and are fresh alternative to traditional dips.” ….so they’re practically healthy, right? 😉

Anyway, they sent me the Spinach Artichoke & Parmesan and (my personal favorite) the Artichoke & Jalapeno…you guys, my roomie and I TORE THROUGH every last tub of this stuff. It is so good. I have a recipe coming your way involving the dip, but rest assured it was also amazing scooped up with crackers/chips, veggies, a spoon…you name it.

laterrafina

My favorite way to enjoy it was with some hot spaghetti squash and stir-fried veggies! It almost became like a pasta sauce.  MMMMMM. pasta. {I’m currently avoiding carbs after 6pm to avoid bloating/any stray belly fat tomorrow…Lord help me!!}

Hope you all have a fun and safe weekend!

What are you planning to dress up as for Halloween?

What’s your favorite kind of dip?

Blend Retreat — The Hike!

So, our time in Park City for BLEND Retreat this weekend wasn’t only about food. Mostly food. But not only food 😉

(Funny story, I told my mom I wanted to show her pictures from Utah last night and I started showing her my previous blog post…halfway through, not realizing that the post had a theme, she goes, “Did you do anything but EAT?!” HAHA!)

There were also two Boot Camps scheduled for Saturday and Sunday mornings, hosted by GPP Fitness.

I heard it was great {and exhausting! They did the Deck of Cards workout in 7,000 ft altitude, whew}…but I didn’t go.

You see, I got back to the hotel room around midnight after grabbing a drink {and playing some Buck Hunter, obvi} on Main Street in “downtown” Park City. I was all set to wake up at 6:45 and drowsily walk down to the ballroom where Boot Camp was taking place. However, my body decided to freak out and wake up once an hour, every hour, during my fitful 6-7 hours of sleep. I decided to let my body recover for a little bit so that I could definitely enjoy the rest of the weekend, and went for a short run instead.

Rainy

Or…attempted to anyway. It was so rainy! I ran up and down a few hills and sets of stairs and got super winded, super quickly. Must have been the 7,000 foot elevation!

I’m so glad I let my body recover, because I was feeling quite a bit better after we had our Laughing Cow/Muesli Fusion Breakfast and it became time to go on our hike!

hikelobby

Check out all those girls gathered in the lobby ready to hike!

For those who didn’t want to participate in the hike, a Zumba class was held in the ballroom. I really wanted to try it, but I decided my belly was too full of bagels and muesli to jump and dance around!

The hike was sponsored by PROBAR, who provided us with their CORE energy bars and BOLT energy chews to get us through the hike. We all loved the energy chews, which had a good ingredient list and tasted like fruit snacks!

As for the hike, it started out a little shaky…

MUD

MUD2

The mud on the road leading us to the trail was REALLY bad. You see, it drizzled on and off most of the weekend that we were in Park City, which created some pretty wet conditions. Quite a few people turned back after seeing how treacherous it was just to trek through the mud (I swear my feet weighed an extra 5 pounds!)…but I definitely already felt guilty for skipping the morning workout, so I trudged along.

And I’m so glad I did!

duringhikeThe trail itself wasn’t nearly as muddy.

gorgeous

And the views were spectacular!!!

There was even some snow on the ground still:

It was crazy to me that, even though there was still snow on the ground, everything looked so lush and spring-like.

Hi Ashley and Becky!

Eventually we made it to the top, and of course gathered to take pictures.

I loved how everyone’s workout gear was always so bright throughout the weekend. I am all.about wearing obnoxiously bright clothing to work out!

Back down we went!

By the time we got back to the Canyons Resort area, the clouds had lightened up a little bit and I realized my face was actually a bit sunburned. WTF? Although, am I really surprised?

The trail itself was supposed to be about 3 miles, but here’s how long it ended up being total, including our muddy little jaunt to the trail:

20130521-120643.jpgCheck out that elevation!

I’m very glad I decided to stick with the hike, because history repeated itself on Sunday morning…I missed Boot Camp again.

I know, I know. I went to a healthy living blogger retreat and didn’t go to EITHER of the workouts.

Let’s just say on Saturday night, we got plenty of ab exercise by how much we laughed! But that’s a story for another post 🙂

Stay tuned for more about all the SWAG we got (you think all these sponsored meals sound awesome? Wait until you see our SWAG BAGs!) and some stories and tips from the Canyons Resort area and Main Street in Park City! I’ve also been busy incorporating all the swag into some recipes (Muesli Fusion/Silk/Bobs Red Mill overnight oats, anyone?), so I should have a recipe for some protein muffins to share by the end of the week! I mean they definitely gave us enough.
